Island Forgotten
An erasure poem adapted from an Associated Press article by Meghan Barr about Staten Island after Hurricane Sandy
Do you see
she asked, resignation
two young
brothers swept
from mother’s arms
drowned
a forgotten island
In the shadow
dazed
survivors roam
sand-covered streets
under the weight
of water
fire trucks
scatter
relief
wash muddy
hands
for
salvage
